The home-office desk setup that actually reduces neck and wrist pain

If your neck aches by mid-afternoon or your wrist tingles at night, your desk is probably fighting your body. Three or four small changes fix most of it — no new chair required.

1. Get the screen to eye level

A laptop on a desk forces you to look down all day, and your neck holds your head there. A laptop stand that raises the screen so the top of it is roughly level with your eyes lets your head sit balanced on your spine instead. Aluminium stands with multiple heights let you dial it in and fold flat for travel.

The catch: once the laptop is up high, its keyboard is too high and too close. Which is why step 1 always comes with step 2.

2. Add an external keyboard and mouse

With the laptop raised, you type on a separate keyboard that sits low, letting your forearms stay roughly parallel to the floor and your shoulders relax.

  • A split or ergonomic keyboard lets each hand sit at shoulder width with a natural wrist angle, and a cushioned wrist rest keeps you from planting your wrists on a hard edge.
  • A vertical mouse puts your hand in a "handshake" position instead of palm-down, which takes the twist out of your forearm. It feels strange for a day, then normal.

3. Fix the camera and the light

On video calls, a laptop webcam looks up your nose and everyone leans in to be seen. A separate webcam clipped at eye level, with a window or a lamp in front of you rather than behind, does more for how you come across than any background blur.

For the desk itself, a warm, dimmable lamp reduces the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room — one of the quiet causes of tired eyes.

4. Stand up on a timer

No equipment needed. The best posture is the next one — set a reminder to stand, stretch and refill your water every 45 minutes.

A sensible order to buy

  1. Laptop stand (unlocks everything else)
  2. External keyboard + mouse
  3. Webcam at eye level
  4. Desk lamp

Our Office & Productivity collection has the aluminium laptop stands, split keyboards, vertical mice and privacy-shutter webcams to build this setup one piece at a time.
